1. Information we collect
We collect the following categories of personal information, depending on how you use the Service:
- Account information. Email address, handle, and a hashed version of your password (we never store your password in plain text), plus an optional display name.
- Creator profile information. Display name, bio, tip presets, and content you upload, such as product files and images.
- Connected social account information. If you are a creator and connect a social account (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Reddit, or Facebook), we receive account metadata from that platform — such as your handle, profile identifiers, and verification status — through its official sign-in flow. We do not receive your social media passwords.
- Payment and transaction information. Tip and purchase amounts, fees, payment method type, transaction status, optional messages you attach to tips, and payout status for creators. Card numbers and full bank details are collected and processed by our payment processors (Stripe and PayPal), not stored by us.
- Cookies and similar technologies. We use cookies that are necessary to operate the Service — session cookies to keep you signed in and short-lived cookies used during social account connection flows. We do not currently use advertising cookies or third-party marketing analytics. If that changes, we will update this policy.
- Device and log information. IP address, browser type, and request logs of the kind typically collected by web hosting infrastructure, used for security and to operate the Service.
2. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- provide the Service — creating accounts, matching creators to their posts, processing tips and purchases, and delivering digital content;
- send transactional communications, such as password reset emails;
- show creators activity related to their page (for example, tips received and optional messages);
- prevent fraud, enforce our Terms of Service, and comply with legal obligations;
- maintain, debug, and improve the Service.
We do not use your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
3. How we share information
We share personal information only as needed to run the Service:
- Payment processors. Stripe and PayPal (including Venmo payments made through PayPal) process payments and payouts and receive the transaction details needed to do so. Their use of your information is governed by their own privacy policies.
- Creators you support. When you tip or buy from a creator, the creator can see the amount, the date, any message you include, and — if you are signed in — your handle. Creators never see your card numbers or bank details.
- Service providers. Hosting, database, file storage (for creator-uploaded content), and email delivery providers that process data on our behalf under contractual confidentiality obligations.
- Legal and safety. When required by law, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of TipTap, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers. In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this policy.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined under California law.
4. Your California privacy rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA) gives you the right to:
- Know and access the personal information we have collected about you;
- Delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to legal exceptions;
- Correct inaccurate personal information;
- Opt out of sale or sharing of personal information — note that we do not sell or share personal information as defined by the CCPA;
- Limit use of sensitive personal information — we use sensitive information (such as account credentials) only to provide the Service;
- Non-discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@thetiptapapp.com from the email address on your account (or with enough information for us to verify your identity). You may also use an authorized agent, subject to verification. We will respond within the timeframes required by law.
Shine the Light. California Civil Code § 1798.83 lets California residents request information about disclosure of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes. We do not disclose personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes.
Do Not Track. Our Service does not currently respond to browser Do Not Track signals beyond the necessary-cookie behavior described above.
5. Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service, and afterward as needed to comply with legal obligations (for example, transaction records), resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it.
6. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information, including password hashing and encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and you must be at least 18 to use it. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised policy here with a new “Last updated” date. Material changes will be communicated through the Service or by email where appropriate.
